Relaunch: Ministry of Defence Print E-mail

The brief
We worked very closely with the Ministry of Defence to relaunch its long-standing publication, Focus, (relaunched as Defence Focus) which goes to all members of the armed forces and civil servants. We presented MoD’s in house team with three design routes, so challenging its preconception that Focus should be relaunched as an A4 publication – the format is now B4.

Our response
The same live copy was shown in each of the designs so the client could compare like-for-like, while we also developed new approaches to existing content – for example, features with shorter word counts, news stories shown as a digest. We also developed and visualised new content ideas. Many of these ideas have been adopted.

Feedback has been very positive – 85 per cent of respondents in a recent survey prefer the new-look magazine. And the CiB like it too – it won an Award of Excellence at the 2008 Awards.
